Default Transmission

I have a 99 1.6 automatic that recently began to make noises in the engine, as if gravel was cycling through. It only makes these noises when the car is in park and neutral. I took it to the shop and the guy said the noise was in the transmission. He asked if I was driving wrecklessly, I said no,or if I had slid on ice. I said there was one time where I lost control on ice and slid until I came to a gradual stop. He blamed the noise on this saying the something in the transmission was cracked. In order to check it out, he would have to pull out the whole transmission. I asked him what I should do, and he said to drive it until the transmission goes on me, that it will cost the same now or later and that the car could go for a few more years before completely breaking down. What do you think his prognosis and what are your suggestions?
