rattling sound
#4
Is it more of a squeek? Try placing your hand on the hard plastic piece that surrounds the stick shift. I recently purchased an RL (3 weeks ago) and it makes a squeeking noise when a accelerate or go over bumps. It took me a while to figure out that it is the hard plastic piece moving during these manuevers that makes the noise. If I press on the plastic piece the noise stops. Otherwise I have not figured out how to fix this and dealer claims that when it test drove vehicle noise was not present.

Hi Everyone
With 120K on my 97 RL, I had a rattle in passenger side front end. Happens at low speeds on bad roads. Gets progressively worse. Cost me $1000 (dealer) to change out upper control arms. Fixed the problem. Now at 220K, I have the same rattle (almost like a thump when I hit low speed bumps). Don't know if I'd do it again.
Dealer can diagnose problem, but bring your checkbook!!

Even when you bring your checkbook the dealer cant always diagnose those or sometimes any problems..they are getting pretty bad as fixers of the vehicles that they sell:

rattles are hard as hell to chase.
when a car is on a lift where eyes can see it, there are no bumps to drive over
when the car is on the road its hard to see inside the fender and look at the suspension.
so techs resort to wiggling stuff, banging, and prying in order to see if they can get it to make any noise.
try to find out exactly what causes the noise...
engine speed
bumps. 1 wheel or all
temp outside
engine temp
speed of vehicle
turning is it worse or not
take a note pad with you and write this down because it can save the tech some time and help pinpoint it.
and with that info i bet we here can narrow it down for you.
