Default no dash speedometer area lights, '90 Legend

I messed up my dash lights on my '90 Legend by overloading the dimmer circuit (tapping into the center console light just below the ash tray area) with an aftermarket 12 volt accessory and now the dash lights don't work at all. At first, the dimmer stopped dimming and was at full brightness. that should have been a clue to find another heavier duty 12 v power source but I waited too long. Then I smelled that smell that says something is burning and immediately disconnected the overload item, but now my dash lights don't work. My radio lights and all other lights work, just the speedometer dashboard area. I checked the under dash fuses and they all look ok. I haven't yet checked the under hood fuses, as I thought that was a long shot for a fix but will check it tomorrow. I'm pretty sure something got fried in the dimmer circuit and it's probably the switch. Anyone ever replace one? Any ideas? I do not want to spend a lot of money in the repair shop as I would rather live with the inconvenience or rig up an aux. light if I can't fix it right, economically. Any ideas?
