My friend needs help with an '04 RL. Apparently, the car worked fine that morning driving out of the garage just onto the driveway. But later in the afternoon when the car was trying to be started, the engine almost started, then died. Now whenever the key is turned, it makes a clacking sound and doesn't work. Any suggestions?

my bet is a timing belt popped possiable head damage too.

You didn't mention mileage nor the condition it is normally parked in as well as what part of the region the car is located..
