Hello!


I have a question that I'm hoping someone might be able to help with my 1988 Acura LS


I realized that my battery was getting really weak, an opted to swap it out with a new one. Now, keep in mind that the old battery is really weak, but still has enough juice to attempt to turn the starter over.


I changed out the old corroded battery terminals and put the new battery in place, and then the interior lights external lightsbegan to flash. If that wasn't odd enough, I could here a clicking noise coming from a relay switch located on the upper driver's side fender well. Needless to say, even though my gauge lights would come on while turning the key, I wasn't getting anything beyond that.The starter wouldn't turn over.


Thinking that ECU might need to reset itself, I disconnected the negative battery terminal for a few minutes,then reattempted, getting the same result.


So, to sum it up, this is what I know so far:


New Battery - checked at an Auto Parts store, came back fine and fully charged.


Clicking noise coming from a relay switch once the new battery is connected.


Starter won't turn over with the new battery, and lights will flash intermittently.





Any ideas?

wow that sounds like a bad batt
re check those wires and make sure there clean and correct.
do you have the ability to charge this batt?
if so do things change when you try to start it while its charging or even while its being jump started?

corrosion can go deap into a batt cable it may take replacing

any chance you hooked the batt up backwards for even a second? (flintch)

Well, this is what I get for being a dumbass... but, you're going to laugh when you read this; it was a new one on me... This is what I told my stepdad, who's a retired mechanic, and it surprised himtoo...


"OK, so here's the deal....


Just because I refused to believe that the starter had gone bad, I went back out to the car, and rechecked the new battery terminals and connections to the starter, battery, etc.
I went to turn over the ignition, and still the car was acting like it wasn't getting power to the starter. Thinking that I might have jarred a fuse loose, or possibly blown one by putting on the new battery, I checked all the fuses underneath the hood... they all looked fine.
To double check, I got in the car, and opened the fuse panel to check all the fuses under the dashboard. While following the guide inside the fuse panel, I checked the fuses that pertained to the issue at hand, the starter fuse, and the ECU fuse, which both were in good shape.


While looking at the fuses, I thought that I might have possibly burnt a wire along the way, so I started following the wires along the fusebox...


That's when I saw it. Alongside the fusebox was a separate set of wires that lead to a little red button... The button was a RESET SWITCH.


After pressing and holding it for a couple of seconds, I turned the key, and the starter jumped. After counting to ten, I released the button and tried the key again, and the car fired up with no problems. I took the car out for about ten minutes to let the ECU reset itself, and it's not showing any issues so far... D'OH."


I think the moral of the story is to double, even triple check everything, you might be missing an importantdetail, nomatter how small... ha ha ha....

hmm a reset button on a honda product?
sounds to me like the car has a aftermarket alarm system.
but hey you got it working

The blinking interior lights and exterior markers would somewhat be indicative when the new battery was hooked up(found that out through a post by someone w/a similar issue with a Subaru Forester &amp; their keyless remote). Learn something new everyday... ha ha ha.... Thanks again for the support!

hahaah.....


its not your starter.....its and aftermarket alarm....that is the starter kill that prevents you from starting......the clicking noise is the flasher that flashes your parking lights when the alarm is going off....all you have to do is unplug it if you dont have the remote.....it should be under your dash.....just listen for the clicking noise and unplug that black box.......
