Whats this belt for?

I have a 1990 acura integra. A belt is starting to go out and I'm wondering what the belt is for? here are some pics

I've been told it's for the air compressor. Whats dose it do for my car? I was told even if the belt breaks that my car will run. I'm wanting some more input.

so whats this belt for and what happens if it breaks?
