My 89 Legend makes an on again/off again (mostly on) sound while the wheels are moving. Sounds like your bicycle did when you put a playing card between the wheel spokes as a kid.


Any Ideas?

 

Here's a guess. Is there a stone stuck in the tread. Happened to me. Even a bent nail not gone completely thru will make the sound.

 

Im betting it clicks worse when you turn under power

if it does you have 1 or both axle shafts going bad.

 

the bearings inside steering column may have been worn out. replace them soon as you can..

Thanks for the info. You guys are very helpful. I'll clarify my poor description of the sounds.


The sound is more like shuffling cards--whirring clicking. It lasts 2 seconds on and one second off, while the wheels are turning and sometimes while the car is not moving.


Turning doesn't change the sound, it happens while driving straight.


No rocks in the tires.


The sound seems to be coming from under the dash on the driver's side. I wondered if it had to do with the odometer.


When I roll down the driver's window and stop next to something that will bounce back the sound, it is loud enough to hear from outside the car--not just a small inside noise.

 

Correction, when the wheels stop turning the noise stops.

 

that does sound like a speedo cable.

jack up the car and see if the noise gets faster at speed.

is this vehicle a auto? the auto transmissions have a few relays and valves run by a transmission computer.

does it click in reverse?

if you have very small hands try unhooking the speedo cable from the transmission and see if the noise stops.

odometer?
hold the trip button.

 

The sound doesn't happen when the car moves in reverse.


The frequency of the clicks remains the same at varying speeds.


It is an automatic transmission.

The local mechanic shop told me today that the sound is made by the
Air Pump motor cycling on and off. They said there is probably a leak in the system. They did not fix the noise, and said it was not a problem to worry about. Sound right to you all? I'd like to have a quiet running car.

 

That doesn't sound right to me. Is it an Acura mechanic or more of a "Joe Mechanic" kind of shop? Irregardless, no good mechanic would ever dismiss a noise as unimportant if it's easy enough to fix. I mean if the part to fix would cost more than buying a new car, then obviously I'd see a reason to dismiss fixing the problem, but an air pump motor? Pleeeease. Definitely take it to another mechanic, I say.
