Default Left the oil cap off now its all over my engine?

Last time I put some more oil in my car (about a week ago) I accidently left the cap off (I still have it) so it must have spurted up over my engine and all under the hood.

is this bad, what should I do,

I heard all I need is some goo-off stuff and to rinse it down. is that really all I need to do.

I was adding some oil to my car and forgot to screw the oil cap back on. While driving the car started smoking really bad. I was able to pull over and check the oil level, it was half a quart low, and there where no splashes on the hood. I replenished the oil and drove around, the smoke has cleared up quite a bit but still smokes. My question is what kind of damage could it cause?
