2005 Acura TL Transmission Delay
 

Good Afternoon,

I wanted to get peoples input on the issue I currently have. I have an automatic 2005 Acura TL with 75,000 miles, and have always serviced it from an Acura/Honda dealer at the required maintenance times/miles. The situation I have is when I go from park to Drive, and especially when in Reverse going to Drive there is a significant delay (5 seconds) before it will "catch" and go in drive. When I am on a hill this is a definite problem, but even times on a level road it seems to be an issue. I have brought it to the dealer (3 separate ones) and all have said there is nothing wrong w/ the car or "that is normal". Has anyone else had this issue and what was the corrective action, if there was one. Is this just the way the transmission is and I will just have to accept this the way it is until I get a new vehicle?

What you describe is not normal operation
 

I also have an 05 TL and the transmission engagement when moving the shift lever is immediate.

The big question I have is whether your car is under warranty or not. From a time perspective, it should be out of warranty, however if it was still under warranty the first time that you took it to the dealer to have it looked at for this problem, you may have a case for warranty coverage.

If this problem is not a warranty claim, then I would start looking for a good independent mechanic and see if he can diagnose the problem.

If this is a warranty claim, the I would be writing a letter to Honda of America about the problem and including copies of the 3 dealer service tickets. Honda needs to get a zone service rep involved to see if he can help figure out the problem and instruct the dealer in resolving the problem.

Seems 85,000 is a bit soon for a transmission rebuild/replacement.

What is the history of this car? Trans fluid changed how many times and with what fluid.

Regarding the history of this car Acura TL 2005, particularly the recent transmission fluid changes (recommended every 30,000 mi) - - -
59,000 mi -- mechanic used BG Products Inc's "BG Protection Plan."
87,000 mi (last week) -- changed under same plan as above.


Mechanic told me the 3-5 second delay I experienced in transmission engaging (i.e., from Park-to-Drive and from Park-to-Reverse) had been occurring due to a "vacuum leak." Evidently they thought they had fixed the leak. However, since getting the car back, the same problem continues (from Park-to-Drive), and additionally there are now delays when the car's automatic transmission attempts to move from one gear to another.


As mentioned, 87,000 mi seems early for the transmission to break down in an Acura TL 2005. Hoping to learn more from my mechanic this week.

Are they changing the fluid with Honda/Acura trans fluid?

Also, this is just me....I'm not a fan of "additives".....just give me the OE fluid - for Honda/Acura there are two fluids I never want to go away from OE - Trans and PS.

I will admit, I don't know a whole lot about Acura's....I cut my teeth on Accords. I'm a mod on an Accord website (why else would Ang make me a mod here with all of 16 posts), but I have to assume that since they are in the "family", their little quirks are the same.

I was reading all the post, and I think you can just try the geniune fluid, long time ago my brother had the same problem and he fixed it just using the correct ATF, i think he bought the fluid by net,

Transmission replaced after only 87,000 mi.
Acura dealer said their price >$2,500 was "cutting a deal" for me.
Could have taken it step-by-step, but a transmission specialist indicated there were two codes indicating 'internal issues' for which "step one" (cost $900) is taking things apart. At that point, decided to simply have Acura install the new transmission.
