How-to: Replace the Brake Pads on a RSX
 

I just helped my buddy replace the brake pads on his RSX Type-S so I've decided to post a brief D.I.Y. article on the procedure. Hope this helps someone out there!

**REQUIRED TOOLS & PARTS**
Jack
2 jack stands
Lug wrench
Metal machine ruler/dial calipers
Socket wrench set
Flathead screwdriver
Brake cleaner spray
1/4-inch paint brush
Large C-clamp
Wheel bearing grease
Anti-squeal lubricant (WD-40)
Brake Pads (duh)

**COST OF JOB**
This could vary wildly depending on where you source your parts from. I bought all of the tools from Home Depot and the pads from w w w w acuraparts warehouse Dot COM so I was able to save lots of cash over sourcing the parts from a dealer :D


**Removing Pads**
1) Place the jack under the front center jacking point, and support it with jack stands at the factory jack stand locations (on either side of the radiator support).

2) Remove both wheels with the lug wrench.

3) Check brake pad thickness with the metal ruler or dial calipers. Replace pads if they have less than 1.6 mm (0.06 inch) of material left.

4) Remove both caliper bolts from the back with a 12mm socket or box-end wrench.

5) Pry the caliper free of its retaining bracket with the flathead screwdriver, and carefully set it on top of the brake rotor.

6) Pry the brake pads and shims from the bracket by bracing the screwdriver against the rotor and working around the pad's perimeter.

**Installing New Pads**
1) Clean the caliper and mounting bracket assembly with spray-on brake cleaner, and inspect for cracks.

2) Apply wheel bearing grease to the inside of the cylindrical sliding mount sleeves through which the bolts pass. Keep grease off the pads and rotor.

3) Apply anti-squeal lubricant to either side of the brake pad shims, and re-install the pads and shims in the reverse order of removal.

4) Slide the C-clamp over the caliper assembly, centering its screw pad into the caliper piston's center.

5) Apply pressure to the caliper piston until it's flush with the caliper body.

**Reassembly**
1) Drop the brake caliper back into place, and insert the bolts to hand-tight.

2) Tighten caliper bolts to 36 ft-lbs. of torque.

3) Repeat this process on the other side.

4) Re-install the wheels, and lower the vehicle.

5) Pump the brakes five to 10 times before starting the car
