Part of better approaches to tourism promotion

Tourism planning in the UK must incorporate an overall approach to the development of tourism infrastructure. Now the question arises, what should be done to develop proper recreational and entertainment facilities in the UK? Any plan of tourism development would have to fulfill two objectives that at times conflicted with each other.

The first aim should be to project the British culture that showcases our classical art, music and dance at its best. There is also a need to cater to the tastes of a tourist even if they are deemed to be vulgar. The solution by no means is an easy one. Hitherto the government has concentrated on projecting a local image of the art and culture of the UK. The Hotels In London Heathrow area on the other hand, have been insisting on a reversal of this policy and demanded permission to import foreign artists to perform at popular shows in hotels, restaurants and clubs.

The solution to this approach lies in developing a strategic mix. The development of classical art, dance, music and other facilities can never be an economic proposition. Nevertheless, they have to be promoted for national and international reasons. They cater to a small section of the society often referred to as the social elite. This would mean giving a fillip to national theaters and other institutes all over the country in general and especially in places of established tourist interest such as London, Glasgow and Liverpool.

The setting up of such institutes is possible only with state subsidy as they cannot stand in competition with centers of mass entertainment. In most European countries including England and France, the national theatres are highly subsidized by the government. While the Russian theater was well known all over the world, during the heydays of the former Soviet era, things have gone from bad to worse today. Such a situation would have overtaken the national theaters in the UK if the national government would not have stepped in.
