Alright i have a 98 gsr that has been modified for a turbo kit but the guy i bought it from did not replace the injectors like i thought he had. so it was running lean. anyways i put some double prong titanium spark plugs in. which i found out later was a terrible mistake (apparently you are only supposed to put coper plugs in a boosted car. anyways to make a long story short, the plugs i put in, literally exploded in the combustion chamber and took out an exhaust valve and left a ton of metal all over on the head so my question is...

Where is a reputable place to send my head for machining, port and polish, and all that fun stuff? I am in Idaho falls and everyone i have talked to told me that i need to send it away cause no one here really knows anything about hondas/acuras. Good and low cost is definitely preferred.

Also, should i replace my pistons? turns out they are stock not turbo pistons is that ok? and there is a bit of metal on them too from the spark plugs but i could probably clean em up if i keep them.

any help you can give me would be awesome thanks

Ty

That sucks. I'm really sorry that your head went boom. Definately get larger injectors and up grade your fuel pump to keep the juice flowin.

On the piston question, I'm not very experienced with boosting an engine that was designed to run naturally aspirated. But I do knowboostedengines made by car companies don't use the same pistons as therenaturally aspirated models. The boosted versions use a much lower compression ratio piston. (my friends eagle talon is around7.5 to 1)The GSR motor is above 12 to 1 compression ratio. I wonder if your spark plugs didn't explode but rather were smashed by your piston dome. Most aftermarket companies that make stronger GSR pistons should make lower compression piston for boost apps. Did the metal gouge your cylinder walls? If so you need to get them machined or sleeved.

As far as a machine shop, is Idaho falls in Idaho?I may know some guys in portland. Also the Seattle/Vancouver area has some honda guys that should be able to rebuild it. The project of building a B18C1 engine for boost is an expensive one. But dollar for dollar you'll get more horsepower than building it up N/A. Let me know where you live and Good Luck!Edited by: AKinDen

Hey thanks for the post. i will definately be upgrading my fuel system.
Well i know that the piston didn't hit the spark plugs because the elecrodes were blown outwards instead of inwards plus i measured them and they were the same size as the ones i took out which were performing fine.

i think my cylinder walls are fine but i will have to smooth out the top of my pistons if i keep them...they have spark plug metal all over the top.

so the engine i have is already built for forced induction other than the pistons and the fuel supply, so i really just need a machine shop that can clean up the head, make sure its not warped, and do a valve job on it.

Yeah i live in Idaho Falls, Idaho

Thanks again,
Ty

I have only a couple of suggestions. First - what are your goals with this car??? I have 2 DSM's (1st gen eclipse) and one is boosted and one is on the No2. I had bought my 94' N/A GS Eclipse for a couple of grand and wanted to go race, but I never made it even into the 15's, so I wasted alot of money to make a nice car, but I got no power. Second - is it YOUR daily driver??? If it is, would like A/C, do you even have it. If not maybe racing all the time is the car's purpose. I do not believe though that boosting cars that were not originally made boosted doesn't make things easier. I wanted to do that with my 94' GS, but my friend talked me into my TSi 91' that I forked out another $2300 for, but now I have a real drag beast. Runs 14's stock and wait til I get my 16G upgrade. But I still made a nice 94' car that is my daily driver, and I am fortunate enough to own 2 cars, most can't, it is an expensive habit. You could keep it boosted and buy a D16 motor and keep blowing those up. They are cheap right???. Or maybe build a kick butt GSR that is N/A that is your daily driver? What do you want? Think about it. Boost is fun though, you won't wwant to ever go back. Later - Clay

Hey clay_99502 my gsr is already boosted, that is why the head is in such bad shape. the person who had it before me built it for forced induction but he didn't upgrade the fuel system and he thought that the stock compression ratio would be just fine for 8 lbs of boost. Also i found out after the fact that you are only supposed to put copper plugs in a boosted car...i put in double platinum and they blew up. anyways the goal with this car is the build it back up to be the fastest daily driver that it can be. i am just lookin for a trustworthy machine shop to do all the work on my head (and do it right) for a reasonable price. I know what you mean about an expensive habit but</span> i have to tell you...its too late for me. I tried the boosted thing and...wow. i am addicted to cars and upgrading performance but most of all....SPEED!

Hey Ty, I wanted to respond again, now that you have provided more information on what the over all outcome was. Ouch, man, there is metal attached to the top of the pistons? This is not a good thing. With a boosted car the exhaust camber temps a re so high that they will break that adhered metal loose and wreak havoc on that nice bottom end. Those plugs exploded, and when they did they only forced the metal into the top of the pistons, not welded it to them. Sounds as if you will need at least new pistons, and if your already there.....get the point. I have a great Head shop over here in Hood River, Oregon that machines heads nicely and is not slack about even the finest details. Take it from me, I went through 3 heads before I found one he would at least touch, plus it didn't cost to much. About $300 total for shaving, polishing, porting, valves, ect....... But the motor is gonna give you a headache if you don't at least get the pistons and rings replaced. Also keep in mind that every time you shave your head, it raises compression. It's less area now than before. Check out Englishracing.com or speedconcept.com in the Portland area. You shouldn't have to go all the way up to WA. to get a good place. I know people here that love to work on that stuff. Make your assessments and keep in the post. Later - Clay

so it has been a while since i have had time to get back on here but i now have the time and a little bit of cash to do the work on my head and i was wondering if there was a phone # that i could get a hold of that shop you recomended inHood Riveroregon i am ready to get this thing done, and done right. it sucks that it has taken so long for me to get around to doing this but i am ready to get everything i need so i can drive a decent car again...

speaking of which does anyone have any idea on a list of parts i will need to rebuild the bottom end of my engine? i know i will get some forged pistons, rods, rings.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a place to buy internal parts from?

My head has a broken exhaust bolt in it and it needs to be removed... can the shop you recommended do that for me? Can I order another exhaust bolt to fill it's spot?

Any other tips you guys have for me.. I greatly appreciate it... thanks.
