87 legend 09-15-2007 07:13 PM

Hello all this is my first acura. Its an 87 4 dr automatic 191k on car, idle up and dwn in park to about 1800 rpm and will jerk while at slow speeds and idling. Possible fuel pump?? Any help in correcting this would be great

acuralegend 09-15-2007 07:42 PM

it sounds like 2 different things to me

and NOT the fuel pump

first of all a weak/ broken motor mount on a gen 1 legend is fun.

as you give it gas it will twist a engine in its bay a little.
this will cause the throttle cable to move and actually cause the
engine to slow down. (just like you let up on the gas)

thus causing the engine to rock back into its first position.
thus causing the cable to pull the throttle again giving it a bit more
gas. (1 cause of a shakie low throttle launch in gen 1 legends)

second is to have a major tune up. if its new to you and you dont
have proof of it being tuned up recently then doing so is a must.

and i mean major IE...

timing belt

front seals (crank and cams)

water pump

pulgs

wires

fuel and air filter

pcv valve

timing belt tensioners if the current ones are worn at all.

cap and rotor.

then make sure to have the timing reset.

doing this in 1 shot will cost around 700bucks

so if need be do it in stages.

but dont blow tons of tech time hunting for a surge till that tune up is done.

are you talking bout the fluid mount in front? There seems to be about 5 mounts on this motor? btw its a 2.5.

87 legend 09-15-2007 07:50 PM

put a new fuel and air filter cause i thoght it was starving and it didnt do anything. Ill change wires and plugs tomorrow as a start

87 legend 09-15-2007 07:56 PM

another ? if i may ? any particualr plugs to use in this car or will any brand be ok

acuralegend 09-15-2007 08:03 PM

My 88 legend reacted the best with stock old NGK plugs 2.50 each

no the mount i would check would be the one mounted high on the
firewall and goes to the engine/tranz brace. but eithor of the
fluid ones could do it as well. then again it could be something
totally different.

but eyeballing a motor mount is free :)

changed plugs today wires ,cap and rotor cleaned not crusty as i had expected so cleaned and put them back . high idle is about 1250 and in gear bout 800 rpm. for now its seems ok and the mounts are all bad all 5 of them lol wouldnt ya believe that and no one around here has the, oh well lol

acuralegend 09-16-2007 07:55 PM

i just parted out a 87 4 door 5 speed car it had good front and rear lower mounts.

I may also be able to get a full set of 5 new.

call dave at Scott's auto recyclers (970)-498-0662

and we will see what we can do to hook you up.

that upper firewall mount would be the first IMO

87 legend 09-16-2007 08:09 PM
