Hi everyone, my 1994 Integra LS 5 speed (2 door) has 161,000 miles on it. Started overheating and losing it's coolant and the Honda mechanic said he couldn't find anything, but was guessing it has acracked head. Now it's also losing power and sputteringand still losing its coolant, especially at low speeds/gears. So is it a cracked head? If so am I better off getting it fixed or just putting in a new engine? I just got a new job after being unemployed for about 10 months, but the job is a bit of a commute so I'm hoping for the best but trying to prepare for the worst.

Pull the dipstick and chck your oil. Is fluid in your oil? Oil will be milky looking. More likely that you have a bad head gasket. Is the antifreeze turning brown? getting oil in the radiator?

If you have a bad head gasket, get the head milled before reinstalling. Just removing the aluminumhead warps it. New gasket of course and new head bolts, torqued properly. Don't let bubba do it. Get it done right or you will be doing it again soon.

The oil is perfect, no sign of coolant contamination. The tailpipe is clean - wondered if maybe the coolant could be coming out the tailpipe? Tried a new coolant temperature sensor and that didn't help. Someone suggested that it could be the coil or an oxygen sensor??? It's a real mystery at this point. Several mechanics have taken a crack at it and come up puzzled.

have a combustable leak test performed to make sure exhaust gas isnt leaking into the coolant system.

i have done tons of head gaskets on acuras. never seen 1 crack that still ran.

warped is almost a given

very fixable and seldome requires total engine replacement
