Hi all. I recently acquired my sister's '94 Integra, and yesterday while out running errands, my car for some reason didn't want to start. It would try to start then just putter for a moment and shut off. Eventually after a few more tries, it started, and I went straight home.

I figured before I spend money having it looked at, I'd post here to ask what the usual suspects are when something like this happens. Spark plugs? Fuel injector? I'm a total noob when it comes to car mechanics, so I'll likely need to be talked to like a baby. Thanks in advance, I look forward to your responses.

your fuel filter might be clogged. your injectors might need to be cleaned. walmart does it for around $22 after tax. i'd say start with those since they are cheap fixes.

could be your starter solenoid. Older hondas the solenoid usually goes bad after a few years. Edited by: lodgey8nj

If the car is cranking but not starting it's either lack of fuel or spark. If you are planing to roll this car for awhile here is what you should.
1. Go buy a Haines manual. For noobs the Haines is easier to follow than a chiltons.( I am biased in my opinion on repair manuals because the chiltons on the 96-00 honda civic SUCKS).
2. replace your cap,rotor,wires and spark plugs yourself. Don't go crazy money on the plugs. NGK-R plugs are the best for your engine. no expensive platnium or multi pronged plugs required. Buy a spark plug,wire type gage to set the gap on your plugs. Don't use one of those coin looking ones, those suck. Disconnect the negative battery lead first or the rotor will shock the crap out of you when you pry it out!
3. Replace the fuel filter hopefully yourself. If working around gas makes you uncomfortable, It doesn't cost to much to have it done.
4. ENJOY working on your car! It is so satisfying to fix a problem with your own hands. Take care of this teg and It will hit 300k no prob.

All very good advice, thank you. Being that there were a few different suggestions offered, I'm curious how to prioritize them, so that I don't end up spending too much. I clearly know nothing about cars, but I wouldn't mind poking around under the hood, given that I'm not at risk of doing something that isn't cheaply reversable.
