I recently bought a 1995 Acura GS-R with 93,000 miles on it from my inlaws. They said the timing belt had been replaced once years ago but thought it might be getting close to needing to be replaced again.


Can this be done at home or is it more suitable for a dealership to handle this? Also, any ideas on price?

T-BELT R/R SHOULD BE DONE EVERY 6OK OR 6 YEARS. WHATEVER COMES FIRST. I WORK FOR ACURA AND THIS KIND OF JOB SHOULD BE DONE BY AN EXPERIENCED TECH. A COUPLE OF TEETH OFF ON THE GEARS AND YOU COULD HAVE BENT VALVES. WE CHARGE 4.5HR LABOR PLUS PARTS. T-BELT, WATER PUMP AND ACCESSORY BELTS ALL AT ONCE. WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I would have to agree with acuramaster....93k miles is not nearly enough to have the second t-belt replaced ,,and if you are not very experienced , i would not advice taking such a task

 

If the timing belt breaks, the damage to the engine could amount to thousands of dollars. You have a car capable of going for hundreds of thousands of miles with nothing more than regular maintenance and service. Unless you are on a marginal income, why quibble over a 600 dollar that saves you thousands in the long run.


By the way, I just did my 95 Legend in my garage: timing belt, water pump and a few other items. The water pump was a supprise in that the left camshaft pulley needed to be removed before the waterpump could be changed. I made a strap wrench with the old belt that allowed safely removing and installing the three bolts holding it.


If you are not an advanced amature technician, have the prosdo it.
