RSX Maintenance

2002 Acura RSX Base model
one-owner
110,000 miles
Normal maintenance:
Oil & Filter every 5,000 miles Mobil-1 5w30
Air filter 15,000 miles

It is time for more in-depth maintenance.

Here is what I was considering:
Adjust Valves
Replace Brake Fluid
Replace Transmission Fluid
Replace Coolant
Replace Spark Plugs

I called a local auto shop that specializes in Honda & Acura.
Here is what the Service Manager said.

Adjust Valves - don't bother, they are rarely out-of-spec. Do it at 150,000 miles.
Replace Brake Fluid= $5 - his experience is that after changing the brake fluid, many vehicles are back in the shop shortly and need the master cylinder replaced. He suggests removing the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir with a basting syringe, clean the screen, and put new fluid in the reservoir.
Replace Transmission Fluid= $75
Replace Coolant= $68
Replace Spark Plugs= $112

So what about the valve adjustment and the brake fluid? Is what he suggests ok?

Also, about how long does the drive belt last? It still looks good - no cracks at all.

Thanks

That's because when he pumps new fluid through the system, the tech is pushing the brake pedal further than you normally would when driving, and the master cylinder piston seal gets pushed over the ring of corrosion that develops at the end of the normal brake stroke. *When bleeding brakes with an old master cylinder, use short strokes.*

So it's not new fluid that kills the master cylinder; it's the shop's poor brake bleeding technique.

Drive belts should be fine, but also depends on where you live. Usually you check for cracks at 50k and it's recommended to change around 75k-100k. If living in a hot, dry climate, then it's recommended to change them at the earlier end of the spectrum.
