Hi, I have a 1999 1.6 el. Just recently bought it. I very happy with it except I notice the milage is not very good.

I am getting 250 k for every 30 litres. Has anyone ever noticed a problem like this?

Note-I keep the car in my Garage. I thought it maybe I hada gas leak but I don't smell gas. So I've ruled out a gas leak.Edited by: dada_man

fuel filter? maybe tuneup?

dada_man 01-17-2009 01:14 PM

yes the fuel filter, tuneups was done.

also, timing belt, water pump, rad flush, tran flush. all this was included when I bought it.

ok if the timing is off a tooth it can effect performance and fuel mileage.

other things to consider.

alignment
tire pressure
transmission slippage
improper plugs and/or plug gap

Some one told me that possibly the oxygen sensor or thermostat might be causing it.

acuralegend 01-21-2009 12:51 AM

yup a cold engine will dump in the fuel to try to warm its self.(does your temp gauge read about center?)

a almost bad oxygen sensor can tell the engin that it needs more gas when in fact it doesnt (but your post catt oxygen sensor will code if thats the case.)

hate to sound like a broken record...but have you had the timing bet rechecked?

Thanks for looking into this matter.

I went back to the mechanic and he checked the timing and the thermostat. It has been between 14-20 degree Fahrenheit up here ever since I bought the car (back in Dec). The temperature gauge always seem to be at one third of the way up. And the car always seem to be running slightly fast. They also changed the drivers actuator as I was having a problem with that. (another topic which I will update)

I filled up the car and am now checking the milage in the next week. Will keep you posted after I've figured it out.

Hey Thanks

ok a fast idle can indicate a vacume leak. (does the cruise control work?)

and i personally thing your engine temp is low you may have a partialy stuck open thermostat.

i ask about the cruise control because to do a timing job 1 has to remove it.

what is your idle at?

it should be around 600rpm in park or with the clutch out.Edited by: acuralegend

This is all very good info.

I will check if the cruise is working. I noticed this morning that the idle is under 1000rpm but will look closer.

About the temperature gauge I was told that it should be at half. Right now it is at a 3rd. Wonder if it could be due to the weather outside?

Hi, Cruise control works great. I checked the rpm's at idle in parkand it appears to be at400-500 rpm. And when I'm driving is is around 1900 rpms. What is the ideal rpms when driving?
