I just bought an 87 Legend 6cyl with 150,000 mi and it runs great most of the time in fact I recently added new plugs and wires. About once every 150 miles it will act up and starve for gas and have very limited power. I can usually feather the gas and sorta limp home but if it stalls it is very hard to get started again. The next morning it starts up fine and is good for another 150 miles. I doubt it is the fuel filter because it corrects itself and runs for such a long time trouble free. I am also told the fuel pump either works or fails and rarely is intermittent. My local garage wants to replace the ECM to the tune of $200+ for the part and additional installation. The sunroof does leak a little so it is possible the ECM which I am told is under the seat may have been compromised. Does anyone have any otherideas what the problem may bebefore I drop a few hundred into a car worth only $1000 tops.

1st suggestion:: you should be able to buy an ecu or ecm on ebay for quite a bit less. That very possibly could be the problem. Electronics and water don't really like eachother too much. Truth is, there are so many things that could cause that problem. Being that it only does it every 150 miles or so makes me think that the ecu is the problem. Just checking, when the problem does come up, are you getting a check engine light? If so, what does it point to? lemme know |
Yes there is an EFI light that comes on the dash and I assume that stands for electronic fuel injection. I see ebay ECMs are only around $50 so that might be the thing to try. Has anyone replaced them before? is it easy? DoI have to take the seat out?

you may have to take the seat out but i'm not 100% sure. Beyond that, it's just plug and play.

A WEAK fuel pump can do exactly what your talking about.
A computer wouldnt wait 150 miles to go bad it would do it speraticaly. 25 miles this time 2 weeks next time etc... have a fuel pressure test preformed and see if it can be done on a 150 mile trip...to recreat the problem...this is a tuffie no doubt. HMMMM..... is your gas tank venting correctly? 150miles should be about 1/2tank and that may cause odd fuel pressures or even a vacume in there...next time it dies quick run out and release the cap to see if it sucks in air or blows out a ton of vapor...please be carefull not to blow your self up. |
Hi folks, Its been so long that i forgot I posted here. I am still fighting with the Acura. It finally will not start and sorta chugs and coughs like it wants to start. I bought a different ecm on ebay and it is easy plug and play without taking out the seat. That did not correct the problem. I also had the pressure test done and they said no problem and that its likely the ecm. I also had the fuel pump done to the tune of $300 but that also did not correct the problem. I have trailered it 2 hours away to my uncles shop who is looking into it. He thinks it is likely ingnition or electrically related because the gas part of it seems to work ok. I have heard that the ecm has to be a particular serial number to work properly. The one I got on ebay is quite a few serial numbers off and an 88 and not an 87 - does it make a difference? I will kepp everyone posted. Scott |
Ok time to fire the kiss method at ya...(keep it simple silly)
aircleaner ok? bad gas? batt ok? full of oil? and another place to check... catt it could be plugged and causing the system to exaust else where. Fuel injectors stuck open causing a flood condition. The thing I hate about these cars is that the fuel injection system is very basic and doen not comunicate well with a mechanic. WHAT EVER IT IS PLEASE REPLY AND LET US KNOW WHAT IT WAS. |
Yes, those basic fuel injection systems do try ones technical skills.
