How does an internal combustion engine work (2 or 4 stroke)?

I've 'googled' it but found only basic stuff for 4-stroke engines (the steps, basically). If someone could direct me to a reliable source, preferably with diagrams (so I know what crank shafts, spark plugs, pistons, cylinders etc look like and where they fit) that'd be great!
If you want to try and explain yourself be my guest, but if you do please assume I know absolutely nothing on the subject, because I don't!
