Default replacing radio

ok so my 94 vigor's speakers and radio are shot! it had the cassette and radio on top and a cd player underneath. i bought new speakers and put them in no problem. and tested them with the old radio and it sounded the same way. the radio wasnt putting out the power to push the speakers. So i dumbly cut the harness and wired it myself but i did it the way it said to. when i turned the car on no power. then i remembered the little box behind the radio that had a round plug,so i looked behind the old radio and sure enough it has a round female plug with about 4 inches of room and it also has a round plug in on the back of it. is the box a amp? and how do i get my aftermarket radio to work? any help would be great. thanks
